Is DBT right for you or your teenager?

DBT was originally developed to treat Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), but over the years it has proved highly effective for a much wider range of people. You might benefit from DBT if you or your teenager experience intense emotions that feel impossible to control, patterns of self-harm or thoughts of suicide as a way of coping with unbearable feelings, impulsive behaviour that damages relationships, work or finances, a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of BPD, EUPD, ADHD or autism, relationships that cycle between intense closeness and conflict, or a feeling of being fundamentally different from other people. DBT gives you the practical tools that are missing it is not about talking through the past indefinitely, it is about building skills you can use today

What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a structured, skills-based form of therapy developed by Dr Marsha Linehan at the University of Washington in the 1990s. It was designed for people who experience emotions with unusual intensity,  people for whom standard CBT alone was not enough. The word ‘dialectical’ refers to the central balance at the heart of the therapy: accepting yourself exactly as you are right now, while also working actively towards change.

A full DBT programme teaches four core skills:

Core Mindfulness

Learning to observe your thoughts and emotions without being controlled by them

Distress Tolerance

Building the ability to get through a crisis without making things worse

Emotional Regulation

Understanding your emotions and reducing their intensity and time.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Communicating clearly, setting boundaries and maintaining relationships that matter to you.

What Our Clients Say About Our DBT Therapy

We take our client’s anonymity seriously and a name will only be feature if we’ve been given explicit permission to do so. For those who wish to remain anonymous no name will be featured with the review.

The DBT online group is helpful in finding methods to allow for improvement of life experiences. I’ve found the group experience to be insightful with members sharing their personal experiences with the methods taught and how they have adapted them to make them fit to their specific needs. Making connections to the facilitators and group members dealing with difficulties and still showing up to help improve themselves is inspiring and encouraging to keeping the commitment to yourself of showing up every week. I’ve found group to be a safe space and being surrounded by supportive individuals you truly feel as if you have people in your corner and on your team building together.

I first came into contact with Home Counties Therapy two years ago and at that point was in a very dark place feeling like I didn’t have options or anywhere to turn to.

I have been seeing them on a 1.2.1 basis and have had group DBT sessions as well.

From the outset Lorna was welcoming, understanding and has helped me to get my life back on track. I’m now back in education, have a great relationship with my family and am feeling the best I ever have, this is all down to HCT guiding me along the way and encouraging me to persevere with change.

Jared

I have just completed a 6 month course of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy with Home Counties Therapy.

This course has been invaluable in providing me with skills that I did not possess before beginning the course. In particular I have found the interpersonal skills training and the distress tolerance tools to be helpful.

The trainers are compassionate and have fantastic knowledge of both the course material & the supporting psychology. They have a great way of helping every member of the group to understand the course material and apply it to our own lives. No one gets left behind.

Through DBT and my 1-2-1 sessions I have noticed a change in myself and started to challenge my thoughts and have come to understand why I’m feeling the way I do.

My therapist has been fantastic! Home Counties has helped me a lot and I’ve got skills to set me for life I love the fact that if I am having a crisis someone is always at the end of the phone to help me get through it.

Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions About Our DBT Courses

What Would You Like To Know?

Once you contact us, our clinical admin team will be in touch within 24 hours. We aim to complete your initial assessment within one to two weeks, after which you will be placed in the next available group. If there is a short wait for a group place, we can arrange individual support in the meantime

Groups meet weekly and are run by specialist DBT facilitators.

In-person groups run for two and a half hours with two skills trainers, while online groups run for two hours with one skills trainer and one peer mentor.

Each session begins with a check-in and a brief mindfulness exercise, followed by reviewing the previous week’s skills practice. The main part of the session introduces new skills through teaching, discussion, and practical exercises. Sessions are structured but not rigid there is always space to ask questions and apply what you are learning to your own life.

All groups are capped at eight people in line with the Linehan Institute’s guidelines for DBT delivery keeping things personal and ensuring everyone receives individual attention

The WhatsApp group is a supported space available between weekly sessions.

Skills trainers post relevant resources, homework reminders, and guidance.

Members can ask questions about applying skills in real situations and get a timely response. It is not a crisis line but it is a consistent point of contact that many clients find invaluable, particularly in the early weeks of the programme.

Before starting your DBT programme, you will have an initial assessment appointment with one of our clinical team. This is a conversation, not a test; it helps us understand your situation clearly and ensure DBT is the right fit. What makes our approach different is that we take real care over group placement. We look at who is already in each group and make sure the fit is right for everyone involved, both for you and for the existing group members. This means you start your programme in a space where you are genuinely likely to thrive, not just the next available slot.

Our DBT groups are limited to a maximum of eight participants in line with the Linehan Institute’s guidelines for DBT delivery.

This ensures there are enough people to create a rich, engaging group experience, while keeping the group small enough for everyone to receive personalised attention from our DBT skills trainers.

Combined with our careful group placement process, this means you are not just joining a group, you are joining the right group for you

Yes. We offer two payment options: you can either pay for your six month DBT programme upfront, or spread the cost with a monthly payment plan. We want the process of getting started to be as straightforward as possible, so if you have any questions about payment just raise them during your discovery call and we will talk you through the options.

Our in-person DBT groups are held at Home Counties Therapy’s clinic in the centre of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire; easily accessible from Oxford via the A34 or M40, and from Banbury, Bicester, and Witney. Full address and parking information will be provided when you book your initial assessment.

Our online DBT groups are available to clients online DBT therapy for ease of access anywhere in the UK.
